About Me

I was born and raised in the Salt Lake Valley, oldest of the six children of Earl D. Tanner and Mary Louise Lyon. I graduated from Skyline High School in 1968, then got a degree in mathematics from the University of Utah in 1971.

Returning in 1973 from an LDS mission (Philippines), I entered law school at the U and started practicing with my father in 1976.  My office has never left downtown Salt Lake City and is presently at 68 S Main Street.  My clients tend to be individuals and small businesses for whom I do litigation and transactional work.  I’ve chaired the Bar’s Estate Planning Section and enjoy a top Martindale peer rating of “av”.

I served in the Utah National Guard as a member of the 19th Special Forces Group.  I appreciate the vital role that the military plays in protecting the nation and the sacrifices that its members make.

I moved to West Jordan in 1978 and raised three children here.  38 years have taught me that I have good neighbors.  I try to return the favor through church and community service.  I give free counseling to small businesses through the SBA’s SCORE program and have been a member of the Salt Lake Kiwanis Club for many years.

Although I'm in my 4th year of service, representing my district remains challenging and rewarding.  I enjoy the opportunity to talk with people about the things that matter to them.  For my thoughts on a few of these, click the “Issues” tab.
